Quick Chargers: Tronsmart and Aukey
I bought the Tronsmart charger back in December 2015 at rm96 (inclusive of shipping). It was one of the two brands frequently mentioned in local forums when it comes to CERTIFIED Quick Chargers (based on Qualcomm’s technology).
The build is solid. It feels good and heavy. The 2-pin Tronsmart charger is bundled with a 1.5m (or maybe 2m — I did not measure) microUSB cable.
Sadly, this cable is the sore point about this purchase. The microUSB end of the cable (to plug into phone/ device) is somehow badly designed. It was bent when I got it. And it is also loose. It comes off the device very easily — sometimes all it takes is a gentle “brush’ on the cable and it will come off the device. That means the device is not being charged. This has happened to me a few times when I was charging my phone overnight, only to realise in the morning that the cable had come off and my phone was not charged. I ended up using another cable.
Also, cable quality did not seem that good. I could not get more than 1000mAH when I use this cable to charge my phone (I have a fairly accurate apps to measure charging amp).
It is a 2-pin charger. So if used mainly in Malaysia (where it’s mainly 3-pin socket), one will need to use an adaptor. But if one is a frequent traveller, this 2-pin can be quite useful.
Other than the cable issue, this charger is good. I like it.
Earlier this month, one of my chargers finally gave way and went to gadget heaven. Somehow, I was able to find a local AUKEY reseller (I was not able to find a local AUKEY reseller back in December). So, I decided to try AUKEY this time around — This decision was partly due to the fact that AUKEY charger is only RM75, inclusive of delivery.
As you can see from the photo above, it looks quite similar to the Tronsmart charger. I suspect they could be coming from the same factory, since both are certified by Qualcomm to have proper Quick Charge feature. The charger feels very solid and heavy.
It’s 3-pin. So no adaptor required when using in Malaysia. That’s good.
The AUKEY charger is bundled with a 1.2m microUSB cable. A good one too. I’m able to consistently get a good charging amp — 1800mAH. It does not come off easily, unlike the one from Tronsmart.
Both are good. They both seem to work as advertised. Both have 3 ports to charge 3 devices, though only 1 port is a QC port. I don’t have a QC-compatible device, so I’m not able to test it out. However, both are certified by Qualcomm, so, they should work as advertised.
Since both are equally good, if I had to recommend, I’d suggest AUKEY for being RM20 cheaper. No need to use an adaptor if you’re using it mainly in Malaysia.
