Sarong-gate: A matter of dress code?
The sarong has been making headlines recently.
A few (unfortunate) Malaysians were recently told to “dress up” when they visited the road transport department, hospital and even the lost baggage claim area at KLIA.
Is the dress code necessary? Some say it is, some say it isn’t.
In an ever-changing world, rules and regulations need to change to reflect the new ‘norm’ in the society. Do we need someone to dress up in coat and tie? What is the rationale behind it? If we look at what is happening in the corporate world, many companies are slowing ditching shirt and tie for the casual jeans.
But of course there’s the concern about being “decent” and “respectful”. Then again… What is “decent”? 🙂
There was this discussion about covering up when going to places of worship. The reason given was that it was disrespectful to the god(s) and was a distraction to the other worshipers. One question was then asked – God being so almighty and all-seeing… Would God be bothered with what you use to cover your body with? One would think God is not going to be that “petty”. Then, is it about the other worshipers? If so, then this a problem with the other worshiper’s will and focus?
